Section Description
Students will learn the practice of criminal defense in federal court working with the multidisciplinary teams of the Federal Defenders of New York in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York to represent indigent clients charged with federal crimes. In their placement, students will contribute directly to defending clients’ cases, including interviewing clients and maintaining client contact, investigating cases, and drafting motions, sentencing submissions, and other substantive writing that will be filed on behalf of clients in their federal cases. In the seminar, students will learn about substantive federal criminal law, litigation techniques, mitigation submissions and how to best advocate for clients, ethics and professionalism, and cross-cultural competence in the litigation techniques, mitigation submissions and how to best advocate for clients, ethics and professionalism, and cross-cultural competence in the representation of indigent clients.
