This course will provide an overview of federal antidiscrimination law, with a focus on the major anti-discrimination statutes including Title VII, the Fair Housing Act, and the Voting Rights Act. The course centers primarily on discrimination based on race and sex, but we will also cover sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and disability. Topics will include: normative theories of discrimination and equality; the roles of courts, legislatures, administrative agencies, and private actors in addressing discrimination and promoting equality; key doctrines including disparate treatment, disparate impact, and reasonable accomodation; and the role of social movements. The course does not cover Section 1983, police, or prisons.
