Advanced Family Law: Pre-Nups, Property Distribution, and Alimony in Divorce

This class provides an in depth exploration of some of the most interesting and complex financial issues that arise in relation to marriage and divorce, focusing on pre-nuptial agreements, the division of property and alimony, with a focus on special issues that may arise when assets like enhanced earning capacity, professional degrees, celebrity status and professional practices are in play. Materials for the class include: appellate decisions; expert valuation reports and in-force pre-nuptial, post-nuptial and settlement agreements. Students will also have the opportunity to closely examine current issues in matrimonial law through the questioning of valuation expert witness in class and through their own observations in a matrimonial court and conversations with a matrimonial judge during the semester.
